🧠 Think You Know Sarasota? Trivia!

Last week was a tricky one! Most people didn’t get the right answer so I thought I could do a little history corner with an explanation.

The correct answer was the Cape Haze Marine Laboratory, which was established in 1955 in Placida, Florida, focused on shark research and marine biology.

In 1967, the lab was renamed to honor William R. Mote, a key benefactor who played a crucial role in its financial stability.

Mote's leadership and support helped expand the lab's research into estuarine ecology and biomedical studies. In 1978, the laboratory moved to its current location on City Island in Sarasota, Florida.

Let’s see if you all can get this week’s:

Euphemia Haye’s New Owners Open Up

Rachel and Jason Ghormley have purchased the 50-year-old Euphemia Haye on Longboat Key and plan to preserve its legacy. Rachel has a deep personal connection to the restaurant, where her parents held their 1982 wedding reception and where her father spent his final Thanksgiving.

The couple intends to keep popular menu items like the peppercorn steak and dessert room, while updating the wine list and introducing special events such as live music and a food and wine festival for the 50th anniversary.

Former staff members have returned, and the Ghormleys are committed to honoring the restaurant's heritage with renewed energy and community involvement.

New Condo Proposed near Selby

A Miami-area developer, Unilog Group, has proposed constructing a seven-story, 66-unit condominium building named 777 South Palm Avenue Condos across from Marie Selby Botanical Gardens.

The development will utilize the city’s attainable housing density bonus to include five affordable units and the newly established transfer-of-development-rights program to exceed zoning height limits. The mixed-use project will offer 17,946 square feet of retail space, a five-story parking podium, and amenities such as a gym, clubhouse, and fourth-floor swimming pool.

The site spans three parcels (about 1.09 acres) and was previously occupied by the Kodra Professional Center, purchased in July 2024 for $5.5 million. It is designed to complement nearby mid- and high-rise buildings and fits the area’s growth pattern.
