Woman’s Club Luncheon Raises $13K for Domestic Violence Survivors

The Woman’s Club of Sarasota raised more than $13,000 to support survivors of domestic violence during its annual “Purple for a Purpose” luncheon at Michael’s On East. The event, held in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, featured guest speaker Dawn Burns, a survivor and advocate with SPARCC (Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center). Funds from the luncheon will go directly toward SPARCC’s programs that provide shelter, counseling, and legal help for victims.

City Plans to Grow Sarasota’s Urban Tree Canopy

Sarasota is working on a plan to grow and protect its urban tree canopy. The city’s goal is to balance development with sustainability by mapping where trees are thriving and where more are needed. Officials are partnering with the University of Florida to study canopy coverage and identify planting opportunities across neighborhoods. The project will help shape new policies for shade, stormwater control, and heat reduction. A full report is expected later this year, guiding how Sarasota keeps its leafy character as the city continues to grow.
