Kuro Sushi is rolling into Lakewood Ranch
Kuro Sushi is coming to Lakewood Ranch’s Main Street by the end of September. It’s the fourth restaurant from Daniel Dokko, the talent behind JPan Sushi & Grill and Korê Steakhouse. The space has been fully rebuilt in collaboration with Two Architects, with 120 seats, a full liquor bar, and a menu featuring small plates, grilled skewers, sushi rolls, and an omakase experience at a six-seat sushi bar. The logo is inspired by Dokko’s first sushi-chef knife, a nod to his start as a dishwasher at 19 before opening JPan at 24.
Bayfront Park Seawall Work Moves Ahead
The city plans to replace about 1,500 feet of seawall along Bayfront Park near Marina Jack’s A Dock. The Development Review Committee gave partial approval on August 7. Work will raise the seawall cap, adjust the grade, and add panels that support marine life while helping filter water. Cummins Cederberg Coastal and Marine Engineering will handle the project, prompted by damage from hurricanes Helene and Milton that pushed storm surge into the marina.
Mound Street Condo Project Nears Final City Approval
A new mixed-use condo project at 777 South Palm Avenue is cruising smoothly through the city’s Development Review Committee, with only a few final tweaks needed before full approval. Set on 1.1 acres across from the Selby Botanical Gardens parking garage, this single-building development will stack 66 units—five marked as “affordable”—on top of nearly 18,000 square feet of retail and commercial space. It’ll rise to seven stories, thanks to a mix of an affordable housing density bonus and extra floors earned through the Transfer of Development Rights program that supports historic preservation. A five-story parking podium is folded right into the design.

Last week, I stopped by Sun King Sarasota as I continue to build out the Scoop’s Guide to Sarasota Breweries.
I grabbed a flight to sample a few styles and ended up lingering longer than planned, chatting and people-watching.
