New Look Ahead for the Cortez Bridge
The Cortez Bridge replacement is finally gearing up. FDOT plans to knock down the old 1956 drawbridge and build a fixed-span bridge instead. The new design calls for two lanes, wide shoulders, and big pedestrian sidewalks, plus lookout spots along the way. Design costs about $6.7 million, and the full project is expected to run $115 million. Bids open in March 2026, construction should start that summer, and wrap up in roughly 1,200 days (just over three years).
They’ll keep the current bridge open during work, though there could be some night closures. Right now, crews are relocating the water and sewer lines under the bridge — that’s happening during the day, and a few side-streets will close until next summer.
Ohana Estate Fetches a Big Price
A north Longboat Key estate called Ohana just sold for $17.5 million, closing on Nov. 8. The Polynesian-style, beachside property sits on 2.67 acres and has three pavilions, a pool, tennis court, six bedrooms, seven-and-a-half baths, and even two elevators. The deal was handled by Reid Murphy (sellers) and Deborah Lichter (buyers). Built in 2013 by architect Guy Peterson, the estate includes a seawall that’s stirred some controversy over beach access.
