🏗️ Mira Mar Project Moves Forward

What’s new: Sarasota’s Historic Preservation Board has given the green light for the redevelopment of the Mira Mar property on Palm Avenue, a significant step toward replacing the century-old Mira Mar building with a new five-story structure.

Why it matters: The proposed project has been closely watched by locals due to the building’s historical significance and its prominent downtown location. This latest decision clears a key hurdle for developers aiming to reshape a notable piece of Sarasota’s architectural fabric.

Driving the news:

  • On May 14, the board unanimously approved a certificate of appropriateness for the building’s demolition.

  • They also approved the design of a new five-story mixed-use building proposed by Seaward Development.

  • The approvals were given despite pushback from local preservationists and community members who voiced concerns about losing a piece of Sarasota’s history.

The design:

  • The new structure will include 44 residential units and 7,400 square feet of commercial space.

  • It will feature Mediterranean Revival architecture, aiming to pay homage to the original building’s style.

  • The design received mostly positive feedback from board members, who felt it respected the character of the historic district.

What’s next:

  • With these approvals in place, the developers can now move forward with obtaining building permits and preparing for demolition and construction.

  • No official demolition timeline has been announced yet.
