Happy Tuesday, Sarasota!
Is the week of Thanksgiving too early to start Christmas celebrations? The Sarasota event calendar doesn’t seem to think so.
This next week kicks off a collection of Christmas themed events I the area. Should I create a guide of all the best Christmas activities around ton? Let me know in the poll below.

Record Breaking Sea Turtle Season Comes With a Warning
In 2025, Sarasota’s beaches saw more sea turtle nests than ever — 5,735 recorded by Mote Marine Institute, up from 4,369 in 2024. Loggerheads made up the majority, but there were also 351 green sea turtle nests.
At the same time, there was a record-high number of disorientation events (716), when artificial lights lead turtles away from the water. Experts say that while rising nest numbers are a win for conservation, the surge in lighting-related problems shows we still have work to do to protect these vulnerable creatures
Kuro Sushi Makes a Splash in Lakewood Ranch
Kuro Sushi just opened on Main Street in Lakewood Ranch. Instead of a ribbon-cutting, chefs sliced up a 180-lb bluefin tuna and passed out samples — and the tuna “melted like butter,” according to guests.
The owners are Daniel and Clarice Dokko, along with Anderyas and Mona Putranto — the same team behind two JPan Sushi & Grill spots in Sarasota and Kore Steakhouse in Waterside. They want you to feel at home: “We cook like we’re cooking for our loved ones,” Daniel said.
The tuna came from Spain and Mexico, and there was a live art piece, where the fish tail was inked and printed on rice paper. Tampa Taiko drummers played during the event, adding cultural flair.
It’s not just about the showy stuff — Kuro Sushi seems to be built on real care, tradition and community.
