Columbia Restaurant Passes the Torch to Sixth Generation
The Columbia Restaurant on St. Armands Circle is entering a new chapter as the sixth generation of the Hernandez-Gonzmart family steps in. Richard Gonzmart has led the business for decades, but now his daughters Andrea and Casey, along with their cousin Michael, are taking on bigger roles. The Columbia first opened in Tampa in 1905 and became a Sarasota landmark in 1959. The family says their goal is to preserve the traditions that made the restaurant famous while also keeping it fresh for future generations.
Fruitville Gateway Brings 274 New Apartments to Downtown Edge
A long-empty lot at Fruitville Road and Fourth Street may soon be home to Fruitville Gateway, a five-story, 274-unit apartment complex. The Miami-based developer plans studios through three-bedrooms, with 30 attainable units included. Amenities will feature a pool, gym, and club room, but no retail space. Construction could begin in 2026 and last about two years. The project, covering 3.14 acres, will tap into the city’s density bonus program to fit the number of units and is designed to draw everyone from young professionals to empty nesters.
