Orioles Unveil New Player Development Complex at Ed Smith Stadium
The O's just opened a 47,700 square-foot training facility at Ed Smith — complete with a biomechanics lab, nutrition center, and player lounges — built in under a year. County Commission Chairman Ron Cutsinger called the turnaround "very impressive," and team officials say it's instantly one of the top player development facilities in all of Major League Baseball. Pitchers and catchers report this week.
County Approves $21M Stickney Point Waterfront Park
Sarasota County commissioners voted to purchase the 2-acre property at 1500 Stickney Point Road — you probably know it as the Boatyard — for $18.1 million, with plans to invest up to $21 million total to turn it into a public waterfront park. The site has 700 feet of bay frontage right at the gateway to Siesta Key, and some existing structures damaged during Hurricanes Helene and Milton will come down to make room. Commissioner Teresa Mast called it "a gem."
Capriotti's Sandwich Shop Opens on Tamiami Trail
If you've never had a Bobbie from Capriotti's, you're in for a treat — it's basically Thanksgiving on a sub roll (turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, the works). The Delaware-based chain just opened on Tamiami Trail near Stickney Point, bringing its cult-favorite Butterball turkey subs and cheesesteaks to Sarasota.
🔦 Spotlight: Peachey’s Baking Co
From a tent to a truck to a proper shop on Tamiami Trail — that's the Peachey's Baking Co. story. The family-owned bakeshop just settled into their first permanent home at 4800 S. Tamiami, serving up soft, chewy doughnuts and handcrafted pretzels.
Doors open Tuesday through Saturday at 7am, but fair warning: when they sell out, they close. Worth setting an alarm for. 10/10 doughnut!
