From Gang Life to Glam Nights: Rafael Arguelles Revives the Charles Ringling Building
The historic 1926 Charles Ringling Building in downtown Sarasota is about to get a glamorous new life. Led by restaurateur Rafael Arguelles—yes, that Rafael Arguelles, once a gang member in Chicago, then a federal informant, now a restaurateur—the building’s being reborn as an event space dubbed Venue 1927 with a December opening on the horizon. Inside the 20-plus-thousand-square-foot building there’s a dramatic vaulted ceiling originally designed by architect Thomas Reed Martin, and the space is being re-imagined for weddings, parties, and all sorts of events. Arguelles sees this as more than a venue—it’s a second act rooted in community transformation. And yes, his personal story gives the whole project a little extra flavor.
Lakewood Ranch Car Show Drives Big Turnout for St. Jude’s
Lakewood Ranch car lovers rolled into Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church for the seventh annual Car Show and Cookout, where chrome and charity met under sunny skies. About 150 vehicles lined up for the event, organized by the Knights of Columbus to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Among them was Rob Sebolt’s 1970 Oldsmobile 442 W30 convertible — a barn find once home to mice, now a head-turner around town. What started as a childhood dream he hunted down online has become his daily driver to Publix and the gym.
The Knights raised around $10,000 last year and are hoping to top $13,000 this time, with many car owners donating monthly to St. Jude’s cause.
